Winter and Spring Update

At St. Charles Memorial Gardens, winter can be difficult on the lake and its residents. The swans are one of our concerns. We do feed them regularly to keep their energy up. When we get very cold temperatures and the lake totally freezes we then need to catch our swans and house them in swan shelter until warmer days arrive. We prefer not to catch the swans because of the stress on the birds. It is a delicate balance, but as long as we have open water we would most definitely prefer to leave them out.

We also are preparing our fountains to be set in place and put into service. We have multiple fountains in the cemetery and around the funeral home. We do shut them down in the winter due to freeze thaw conditions. The lake fountain is a year round fountain and does not get shut down unless we have a complete freeze.

Believe it or not, during this time of year we are already looking forward to our spring and summer flower selections that will be placed in beds throughout the grounds. These flowers are usually selected and ordered from the green houses in January. Our tulips were all planted last fall and our biggest challenge with our tulips is keeping the deer out of them. In early spring after unusually harsh winters the sprouting tulips can be a salad for our deer. We use a natural deterrent that smells like grapes to keep our fury friends out of our tulips. We do have a heart though, we will from time to time drop feed corn near their bedding areas to satisfy their hunger and keep them out of our beds.

Early spring is a great time for us to plant trees and shrubs so that they can slowly begin to come out of dormancy as the days warm up. We consistently replace trees and shrubs every year in our cemetery. End of winter early spring is a great opportunity to get that accomplished.

Because some winters and springs are wet, we have graves that need to be repaired with extra dirt due to the settling of dirt and air pockets that come out in the wet ground. We have teams that focus on these repairs daily. Our goal is to have them repaired before a family or visitor reports them. We do all we can to be proactive for the families whose loved ones are here with us.

Ah, Memorial Day! The first long weekend of summer, when millions of Americans celebrate with backyard parties, beach trips, parades and general revelry. But is that what Memorial Day is really about? In truth, this is a holiday meant for remembrance. It’s a somber occasion, thinking about those who have lost their lives for our country, and the families they left behind. For many families bereaved of a loved one who was serving in the armed forces, the celebrations on Memorial Day are a painful reminder of loss.

How do we honor the true meaning of Memorial Day? By acknowledging that real people, with hopes, dreams, and lives, fought and died for our freedoms. The picnics and parades are a wonderful way to celebrate those hard-won freedoms, but there must be a moment when the celebratory mood turns solemn, and we remember what’s been lost. The “National Moment of Remembrance” resolution, passed in 2000, is meant to promote exactly that: At 3 p.m. local time, all Americans are called to voluntarily observe a moment of remembrance, either taking a moment of silence or listening to “Taps”. But beyond this token moment of respect, what can you do this Memorial Day to truly remember?

For the last 57 years on Memorial Day weekend, we pay Honor and Tribute to our Country’s Veterans who, for many, made the ultimate sacrifice so we could enjoy our many freedoms.

On Sunday, May 27 ^th , the Veterans Memorial Program is adding new and exciting activities for all ages and families at St. Charles Memorial Gardens. We encourage you, your family, and friends to be in attendance for our picnic, activities, and program. This event is completely free and open to the public.

The day will begin with a family picnic from 12 pm – 1:30 pm where you have the option to interact with veterans, hear their stories and visit our Field of Honor where thousands of American flags will be flown in tribute to our service men and women .

A flyover of an F-15 Eagle Aircraft will take place (pending operational ability) before the start of the Veterans Memorial Service which includes reading of the names and a poppy ceremony.

We gathered today with a group of bereaved moms, dads, and family members to dedicate this beautiful angel memorial bench to all the babies who have died too soon.

Baue and St. Charles Memorial Gardens along with Wilbert Industries donated this bench in honor of these babies and for all who love them and will continue to grieve them.We are proud to partner with Share Pregnancy and Infant Loss Support to honor and support the families in our community who grieving their baby’s death.

55th County-Wide Veterans Memorial Service Program

On Sunday, May 29th at 2:00pm, our service takes on even more meaning, as we celebrate 55 years of honoring Veterans with our Annual County-Wide Veterans Memorial Service Program at St. Charles Memorial Gardens.

The complimentary program, sponsored by the Memorial Services of Missouri, and Baue Funeral Homes, Crematory & Cemetery allows family members of Veterans who have passed away within the last year the opportunity to join us in our Poppy Ceremony . The names of their loved ones will be read and a bell will be rung for each Veteran to symbolize our deepest gratitude for their service.

This year, we welcome our guest speaker Wendell Webb, National Senior Commandant, Marine Corps League.

We encourage you to pause for a moment of silence and remembrance as you visit our cemetery gardens and see the thousands of flags flying in tribute to our service men and women.

Founded in 1961, St. Charles Memorial Gardens is the only cemetery in the St. Charles County area with a dedicated Veterans Garden and Memorial Service. As we gather at 2:00pm on Sunday, May 24th outside our “ Field of Honor ,” we will pay tribute to all Veterans and their surviving families.

Prior to our event, we will host a Flag Placement Day on Wednesday, May 25th at 9:00am. Veterans and volunteers from across the county will gather at St. Charles Memorial Gardens to place flags at each Veteran’s marker. Anyone who wishes to participate in the flag placement may do so by contacting Baue Community Services at 636-946-4042 for more information.

Our program is free and open to the public. We welcome you, your family and friends to join us as we honor our veterans.

Honoring Peace Officers for 24 Years

Beginning at 7:00pm at our St. Charles Memorial Gardens cemetery (3950 West Clay Street, St. Charles, MO), this event will pay tribute to officers and friends, who have paid the ultimate sacrifice. Guest speaker for the evening will be Tim Fitch, former St. Louis County Police Chief.

“We thank the men and women in public service who put their lives on the line to protect us and our community,” said Lisa A. Baue, president of Baue Funeral Homes, Crematory and Cemetery.
